The Online Library Can Help You Succeed!

Have you visited the Pinnacle Online Library yet? Located at www.pinnacleapps.com/lrc the website has a lot of great tools to help you with your classes and your future profession. You may have used the PCI Online Library to connect with the LIRN database for research, but today I want to explore a few of the Tabs featured on the website. I want to point out a few of the links and explain some of the resources that are under each tab that will help you succeed in PCI classes today and when you are working in your new career tomorrow.

Let’s check out 5 Tabs on the Pinnacle Online Library website:

Weekly Roll

First, the Weekly Roll tab contains a variety of information in a casual blog -type style that updates a couple of times a week. You can find the Weekly Library News Newsletter here, as well as other interesting information, websites and links collected from around the web. You can even click on the RSS feed (Upper right side of the page) and subscribe to the posts to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Web Tools

The Web Tools tab has four sections for you to explore. The first,  “Web Research Guide”  has a number of links that help you search for information on Google. There are a number of links that show you how to test or check a webpage to ensure that you are reading reliable/ truthful information and not a webpage with shabby facts, a corporate agenda, or just plain spam. Next, the “Quick Facts” section contains links to reliable websites such as the Occupational Outlook Handbook (Helpful when you want to check out your future career) or Medline Plus for consumer information on drugs, health and wellness. The next section “For Fun” has links created for general interest (Checkout the Household Products Database for information on harmful products in your closet), Popular Magazines and even a spot for online Trivia. The last section “Student Success” is a web tutorial with helpful information on the topic of student success. Here you can find help with note taking, time management and more.

Success Tools

The Success Tools tab has a variety of videos to help you find information for class on the LIRN database. There is a video that shows a general overview of how to search on the database and find a magazine or journal article. There are also videos that show how to find Online Medical Dictionaries or Encyclopedias. This tab also has a section with helpful APA information including the PCI APA template to make it easy to format and write your papers or find out how to cite a source correctly.

PCI Programs

The PCI Programs tab has a collection of sections each with a focus on a different PCI program. You can find all sorts of information relevant to your degree from professional associations to websites with tutorials and much, much more. So if you are looking for links or information specific to being a Wind Turbine Technician, Massage Therapist or an Electrician, check this area. This tab is also a “work in progress” type area, so if you have requests or suggestions for a great addition to these resources, please email the Librarian.

How To

This tab, as the name suggests, contains “how to” type information on a number of computer related questions. Some are videos, some are links and others are a series of screen shots to give step by step instruction to complete a task. Again if you have any suggestions or questions for this section, please email them to the Librarian.
In addition to all these tabs, the Pinnacle Online Library website also has some fun features such as a Facebook Fan Page link and a Meebo Chat Widget. Feel free to join the in the conversation on Facebook or leave a comment after a Weekly Library Roll post and share your thoughts, fears and your favorite part of being a PCI student.
