Pinnacle Career Institute's Massage Therapy and Dental Assistant instructors recently held a joint lecture for their students to learn about TMJ disorder, and how to relieve the pain it causes through massage therapy.
What is TMJ? This stands for TemporoMandibular Joint. This joint connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of the skull.
Some people suffer from pain or tenderness in the jaw if the joint is damaged or injured. This joint is subject to damage through clenching of the jaws or grinding of the teeth, and numerous other causes. You might know someone diagnosed with TMJD, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.
Massage Therapist and Dental Assistant students were taught how to manipulate the pterygoid and masseter muscles which can bring much needed relief to TMJD sufferers.
